Masterlab 2023 Bioinformatics and high throughput methods in modern research on gene expression control

Application to the Masterlab is possible for immediate start!

What is a masterlab?

Masterlabs are offered to M.Sc. students at the University of Freiburg who are especially interested in academic research. They operate interdisciplinary across faculties.

Within the masterlab, students work on a first own research project, assisted by experienced scientists. The project might be the basis for the master thesis, and could thus be the beginning of a research career. Additional courses and meetings complement the training.

How do I profit?

- research experience: conduct an own small research project under supervision

- insight into modern research questions and methods in biology and bioinformatics

- network with PhD students of different faculties: what is it like to do a PhD in the life sciences?

- option to get funding as a student helper (HIWI) for several weeks

What to expect in the 2023 masterlab "Bioinformatics and high throughput methods in modern research on gene expression control"

The masterlab is offered in frame of the RTG 2344 "MeInBio". MeInBio is a PhD training program with a focus on analyses of spatio-temporal dynamics of gene regulation using modern high-throughput sequencing methods. Learn more here.

The masterlab runs during summer term 2023 and into the winter term 2023 until end of the year. It comprises courses, participation in RTG2344 meetings and a 10-14 week practical research project.

You have the chance to visit general courses (e.g. good scientific practice, scientific presentation) offered for all master labs of the university. You are encouraged to also participate in the RTG2344 monthly progress reports where PhD researchers present the progress of their projects. This is a chance to get in contact with PhD students of different faculties and learn about their challenges and scientific discussions.

Most importantly, you will pursue a practical research project in the masterlab. The research project can be conducted in summer term or in winter term. The exact timing depends on yours and the research groups schedule and is agreed upon individually. The research project will usually be accepted as elective part for your master studies.

Social life:

Participation in the master lab will bring you in contact to master students of other faculties, and to researchers of the RTG 2344 that currently pursue their PhD project at different institutes of the university. A welcome evening and a closing day where you present your research project as a poster will strengthen interaction and network formation. You will have the chance to discuss the requirements of a longer research project, like the PhD project.

Participating research groups

You can pursue your masterlab research project in one of the groups that are RTG2344 members.

For an overview of the projects that these groups currently perform within the RTG 2344, you can also check here.

What else/application

You will sign a  "master lab agreement" when you start the master lab. It documents the necessary participation in courses, as well as the planned research project. A research plan must be written before start of the research project, and a report must be handed in after completion of the master lab.

A student helper contract can be issued for the additional work that you have by participating in the master lab.

Application and start to the master lab is possible from now on and until July 23. Send your application including a motivation letter, your transcript of records (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and a recommendation letter of a university professor to .
